Capella Does the State Fair Shuttle
Each year 1.8 million people congregate at the Minnesota State Fair, a tradition that began in 1859. Coined the “Great Minnesota Get-Together,” this celebration highlights the best Minnesota has to offer, and for two weeks it dominates the hearts, minds and stomachs of residents from around the state – including the staff at Capella University.
With this level of energy and excitement, it’s no surprise that Minneapolis-based Capella University hosts an annual Employee Day at the State Fair. From searching for the best state fair foods to catching shows performed by the biggest recording artists in the world, this all-encompassing event allows employees to relax and recharge with colleagues amid a 320-acre playground basking with statewide pride.
To ensure staff enjoyed the day in stress-free style, Capella commissioned metroConnections to provide streamlined, private shuttle service for their 700 employees.
Getting it Together
Having done larger programs for Capella in the past, both parties knew it would be a great partnership. The biggest challenge? Seamlessly navigating the heavy traffic between Capella University’s downtown Minneapolis location and the State Fair’s St. Paul drop-off site. The route encompassed rush-hour commuters, routine public transportation bus routes and unavoidable summer road construction.
“This certainly posed a logistical challenge,” said metroConnections’ Account Manager Jessica Woodward. “It took cooperation from the City, Metro Transit, and communication among all parties involved in order to implement a strong transportation plan for a successful event.”
Once details, permits and a route were hashed out, a total of 15 school buses, one lift-equipped vehicle and 18 staff members were utilized to ensure a smooth ride.
To help with the flow of shuttles and provide simplicity for guests, attendees were assigned one of two distinct departure times, creatively marketed as either the “Pronto Pup Express” or the “Caramel Apple Express” after popular State Fair treats. Capella employees were also given maps of the Fairgrounds as they boarded the shuttles.
Thank You on a Stick
As a result of strong logistical planning and creative touches that added fun to the trip, the transportation movement went off without a hitch!
“Once again, you delivered flawless transportation logistics. From working with the city to signage, timing and staff briefings; and even coming prepared with rain ponchos and a rain plan – everything was superbly executed,” remarked Beth Beutell, Senior Event Manager at Capella University.
“We so appreciate your dedication, service and partnership. Congratulations on a successful event!” – Capella University
